Permanent
The science behind lift, deposit and the colour you actually end up with.
Each strand has three layers. The cuticle is the overlapping outer shield of transparent scales — dye and peroxide must push past it to reach the inside. The cortex is the thick middle layer that holds your hair's natural pigment (melanin) and gives hair its strength and shape. The medulla is a thin core, mostly irrelevant to colour. Healthy, flat-lying cuticles resist colour; lifted, porous cuticles grab it fast but also drop it fast.
Researched best-practice steps for dyeing hair at home.
Choose your target shade first, then match the dye type to your goal. Temporary sprays wash out in one shampoo — great for testing. Semi-permanent coats the cuticle with zero damage and lasts ~10–20 washes (best on pre-lightened hair for vivid tones). Demi-permanent gently opens the cuticle to deposit, lasts up to ~28 washes, and blends greys without a hard line. Permanent lifts and deposits — the only type that fully covers grey or lightens natural hair, but it's the most committing.
